It’s being reported by several folks now that WordPress 2.0 has hit Beta 1. PhotoMatt made the official announcement earlier this evening on the wp-testers list. I suspected back in August that the WP team would “jump” to v2.0 instead of having 1.6 be the next release.

I haven’t tried to access my blog until just now today, so if any of you were seeing the big, nasty “Internal Server Error” today, please accept my apologies. Also, take this bit of advice – stay away from the WP 1.6 PreAlpha code. Some nasty caching code gone bad right now. That’s what I get for ignoring the wp-testers mailing list posts about it this weekend.

I just upgraded to WordPress 1.6-PREALPHA-DONOTUSE-ORITWILLEATYOURBABIES from subversion and can now enjoy a much prettier admin interface. The Bug Hunt on Saturday squashed over 100 open bugs and that being said, 1.6 is looking better and better everyday.

Well, Spam Karma 2, Bad Behavior, and CJD Spam Nuke are now all disabled in favor of Matt’s new Akismet spam plugin. It uses the spam stopping capabilities leveraged on WordPress.com to filter all comments and decide whether or not they’re “approved,” “held for moderation,” or “spam.” We’ll see how it goes for a few days.

I didn’t really want it to come to this, but I’m tired of deleting 300 comments from my moderation queue everday. Therefore, I’ve installed Dr Dave’s Spam Karma 2.0 in an effort to reduce the amount of clicking I have to do. Now it does have a record for being a bit too conservative on occassion and as such, your comment could get trashed as a result of a false-positive. If you have a comment eaten, please email me and let me know. I’ve got the filters set pretty leniant though, so hopefully this won’t be an issue.

I have absolutely no idea why I’m so excited, but I got the email just a few minutes ago that I’ve been waiting for – my WordPress.com invite! I’ve already written The Alpha Post, but now I need to come up with some real use for it. Any ideas? Shall I run two blogs – one personal, one geeky? You decide… Let me know…

Update: OH! And I have an invite code to give away as well. Someone make me an offer I can’t refuse. This is the IDEAL way to get a completely hassle-free WordPress blog at absolutely NO COST. Free blog hosting for life… Even Jim can’t beat that.

I read in several places today that publishing time once you click the “Publish” button in the WordPress interface was greatly reduced with 1.5.2 – and boy they weren’t kidding. It’s almost instananeous now. Fantastic work!

I downloaded the bleeding edge “unstable” WordPress code just a few minutes ago. Things are coming along nicely for WordPress 1.6. At this rate, it wouldn’t surprise me to see another version jump – possibly all the way to WP 2.0.

In somewhat related news, it appears that WordPress.com is beginning to open up and is starting to send out invites. I signed up several weeks back, so maybe I’ll have something come up in my email soon. I had a peek at the source of Matt’s alpha post and it appears that WordPress.com is running on some of this 1.6 alpha code as well as using the Bad Behavior plugin for managing comment spam. Pretty cool stuff. I look forward to seeing what happens.
