Symlinks coming to Windows
Slashdot is reporting that Vista server’s NTFS file system is learning a new trick – symlinks. We can only hope that Microsoft adds support to the rest of the versions of Vista.

I just picked up this incredible tip from a Slashdot comment and MUST share it with all of you. If you use OpenOffice like I do, you love it for what it does, but HATE it’s speed deficiency. Well, just open up OO and go to Tools->Options->Java and UNCHECK the box labeled “Use a Java runtime environment” and then restart OpenOffice. Notice anything? I noticed about a 400% faster startup – cutting my time from 20 seconds or more down to less than 5 seconds. Unbelieveable really. OO just wastes too much time at startup getting the JRE loaded into memory. Apparently Java is used for some backend scripting. I have a hunch I’ll never even know it’s missing.

Well, Spam Karma 2, Bad Behavior, and CJD Spam Nuke are now all disabled in favor of Matt’s new Akismet spam plugin. It uses the spam stopping capabilities leveraged on WordPress.com to filter all comments and decide whether or not they’re “approved,” “held for moderation,” or “spam.” We’ll see how it goes for a few days.

I just scored a link to the download of Flock and it looks pretty darn slick. I just installed it on my SuSE 9.3 laptop and the program as a whole loads faster than any version of Firefox I’ve ever used. I’m posting this entry from Flock’s internal blog editor and it appears to be working pretty nicely as well. I think I’ll keep this around for a while.

I didn’t really want it to come to this, but I’m tired of deleting 300 comments from my moderation queue everday. Therefore, I’ve installed Dr Dave’s Spam Karma 2.0 in an effort to reduce the amount of clicking I have to do. Now it does have a record for being a bit too conservative on occassion and as such, your comment could get trashed as a result of a false-positive. If you have a comment eaten, please email me and let me know. I’ve got the filters set pretty leniant though, so hopefully this won’t be an issue.

Farrakhan: Levee May Have Been Bombed To Flood Black People

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said it’s up to the government to prove that a levee wasn’t bombed to flood poor black people out of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Later on in the article, instead of leaving it up to the government, Farrakhan is all but quoted saying that he is confident that God will reveal the truth. Come on – which is it? Up to the government or God to show the truth? This guy is a moron through and through. Absolutely insane. Just go read it and laugh.

Apparently, Google has the Google Store which I had never heard about until today. Some neat things over there if you care to show your Google pride. Personally, I’ve been using Blingo for probably a month or so now and don’t care to switch back to regular old Google. I like the format of Blingo’s Google Powered results plus I have the possibility of winning something to do. I’m a heavy user of the search box within Firefox, so changing to the Blingo plugin for that made it easy. If you’ll go and sign up and start using Blingo – we could both win cool prizes just for doing our regular Googling Blingo-ing.
